Honouring VE Day
This week marked the 80th Anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, a critical opportunity to honour veterans, mark the end of the Second World War, bring communities together to reflect on the defeat of fascism, and pay tribute to all those who sacrificed their lives to secure our freedom.
On Monday, there was a procession through London, which showcased the ceremonial traditions of the British Armed Forces, followed by an incredible fly past before The King. The Prime Minister also hosted a street party, welcoming community organisations and veterans.
After the commemorations in central London, I was honoured to attend our own VE Day ceremony at the Enfield Chase war memorial. It was a privilege to stand alongside veterans, community members, and civic leaders to pay tribute to those who fought for our freedom.
The wreath-laying ceremony was a poignant and powerful moment - a time to reflect on the courage of a generation that stood firm in the face of tyranny, and to remember those who never returned home. Their legacy continues to shape our values and inspire our commitment to peace, democracy, and international cooperation.
Enfield North has a proud history of service, and it was moving to see residents of all ages coming together in remembrance. It was a deeply meaningful occasion, and a reminder of the importance of keeping these stories alive for future generations.
We will remember them.
Major Trade Wins for the UK: Deals with India and the USA
This week has brought fantastic news for the UK economy, as the Labour Government announced two landmark trade deals - one with India and another with the United States. These will boost exports, create opportunities, and strengthen our global relationships.
The UK-India Free Trade Agreement is set to increase bilateral trade by over £25 billion annually and deliver a £4.8 billion boost to our economy. The deal includes significant tariff reductions on key British exports like whisky and cars, greater access to India’s vast procurement market, and improved professional mobility between our two countries.
At the same time, the new UK-USA agreement reinforces our longstanding special relationship with America. It opens the door to expanded exports and industrial cooperation, while securing supply chains in vital sectors such as pharmaceuticals. The agreement also levels the playing field by easing market access and reducing regulatory barriers.
Together, these deals send a clear message that Global Britain is delivering for people - opening up new markets, supporting jobs, and building an economy fit for the future - welcome news for residents and businesses across Enfield North.
🏫 Celebrating Young Changemakers at Chace Community School
It was an absolute pleasure to serve as a judge at the First Give School Final at Chace Community School today.
Students select a charity close to their hearts, engage in real social action, and present their efforts in a powerful and creative way to the panel of judges. It was a truly inspiring event that showcased the energy, empathy, and determination of our young people in Enfield North.
The pupils at Chace delivered thoughtful, passionate, and often moving presentations, championing causes that matter deeply to them. It was a reminder of the power of youth-led action and the importance of giving young people the tools and confidence to shape the world around them.
Congratulations to the winning team for their hard work and I was pleased to present a cheque for £1000 to their chosen charity The Nightingale Cancer Support Centre. It’s a charity close to my heart, and a reminder that the Nightingale Night Hike is next Friday 16th May.
Our community is stronger thanks to young people like these.
🏥 Labour Government Delivers GP Surgery Upgrades in Enfield North
I’m delighted patients in in Enfield North are set to benefit from the Labour government’s latest investment in the NHS, with modernised GP surgeries. As part of Labour’s Plan for Change, this major funding boost will enable GP practices to see more patients, more quickly - right here in Enfield North.
For too long, outdated buildings have held back GPs from offering the care they’re ready and able to provide. Across the country, many doctors' surgeries have space to grow but lack the facilities to take on more patients. That’s now changing.
Over 1,000 GP practices nationwide, including The Eagle House Surgery and The Ordnance Unity Centre For Health in Enfield North, will receive vital upgrades, backed by the biggest public investment in GP premises in five years. This means new consultation and treatment rooms, more accessible facilities, and better use of existing space - all designed to improve care and cut waiting times.
This £102 million investment is only possible because of the tough but necessary choices made in the Budget, which saw the Labour government commit an additional £26 billion to rebuild and renew the NHS.
🎥 Standing Up for the Film Industry in Enfield North
I was reassured to hear that my colleague, Chris Bryant MP, is actively engaging with the US administration on the concerning proposal to impose 100% tariffs on foreign-made film and television productions. This proposed move could have serious implications for the UK’s creative sector, including our film studios here in Enfield North.
Our constituency is home to a thriving screen industry, with facilities like OMA Studios playing host to major productions such as Silo and Slow Horses. These projects don’t just bring prestige - they provide jobs, training opportunities, and vital investment into our local economy.
That’s why it’s so important that we stand up for this industry, not only to defend current jobs, but to protect opportunities for the next generation of writers, directors, designers and performers. I’ll continue to back efforts to ensure the UK’s screen sector remains strong, competitive, and proudly based in communities like Enfield North.
