Weekly Update
🏡 Renters’ Rights Bill Becomes Law Ending ‘No Fault’ Section 21 Evictions
The Renters’ Rights Bill has officially received Royal Assent this week, securing a fairer future for over 11 million private renters across England including many in Enfield North.
This landmark legislation delivers on Labour’s Plan for Change by:
❌ Abolishing Section 21 ‘no fault’ evictions, which have pushed thousands into homelessness.
⚖️ Rebalancing landlord–tenant relations to give renters greater stability and protection.
🏠 Empowering tenants to challenge poor conditions or unfair rent rises without fear of eviction.
📅 Introducing fair notice periods, allowing renters to end tenancies with two months’ notice while protecting responsible landlords through strengthened repossession grounds.
After 14 years in which the Conservatives failed to act - and voted against this Bill - Labour has delivered the most significant expansion of renters’ rights in a generation.
Reform also voted against these vital protections, showing once again that they are not on the side of working people.
In the coming weeks, ministers will outline the next steps for implementing the new protections and ensuring every renter can live securely in a safe, decent home.
🏠 Awaab’s Law Comes Into Force Protecting Tenants and Making Homes Safer
This week marks an important milestone in housing safety as Awaab’s Law comes into force - delivering stronger protections for tenants and ensuring that no one is forced to live in unsafe conditions.
The law is a lasting tribute to Awaab Ishak, the two-year-old who tragically lost his life in 2020 due to dangerous levels of damp and mould in his home. His parents’ courageous campaign has led to lasting change, ensuring social landlords act quickly when homes are unsafe.
Under the new rules:
⚠️ Emergency hazards must now be fixed within 24 hours.
🧾 Landlords are legally required to prioritise tenants most at risk, including families with young children and those with disabilities or health conditions.
🏘️ Alternative accommodation must be provided if a home cannot be made safe within the required timeframe.
This is a major step forward in how we protect tenants, ensuring that safety always comes first and resetting the relationship between tenants and landlords.
Here in Enfield, the Council has been preparing for Awaab’s Law for the past year, strengthening inspection teams, tightening reporting processes, and working to identify and tackle damp and mould before it becomes dangerous.
The Labour Government is also committed to extending Awaab’s Law protections to private renters through the new Renters’ Rights Act, ensuring that every tenant in Enfield North - no matter who their landlord is - has the right to live in a safe, decent home.
🚗 Update on Illegal Car Meets on the A10
I’m pleased to report that significant enforcement work has been carried out by the Met Police, Enfield Council, and Transport for London to clamp down on dangerous car meets and improve road safety across the borough.
These reckless car meets have blighted our communities for far too long, so thanks to my intervention, alongside the council, average speed cameras are now firmly embedded on the southern end of the A10, and additional funding has been secured for Traffic Officers from the Safer Roads Team (MO8 Command).
These officers have been working late shifts at weekends to deter car meets, enforce the court injunction, and tackle wider issues of poor driving and vehicle-based antisocial behaviour.
As part of this intensified operation:
🚨 66 Section59 antisocial behaviour warnings have been issued
🧾 153 court summonses were served
🚘 54 vehicles were seized for offences including no insurance or breaching warnings
👮 20 arrests were made for a range of offences, including breaches of the civil injunction
Local police continue to patrol known hotspots, work with businesses to improve car park safety, and make Enfield the default patrol zone for North London’s traffic officers under the Vision Zero initiative.
I’ll continue working closely with Enfield’s police teams and partners to monitor the impact of these measures and ensure regular updates on enforcement are shared with the community.
🌸 Menopause Support to Become Part of Routine NHS Health Checks
This week, the Labour Government announced a major step forward in supporting women’s health - ensuring that menopause awareness and treatment become part of routine NHS Health Checks for the first time.
This change will help nearly five million women across England aged 40–74, as part of the free NHS Health Check offered every five years.
By including menopause questions and support within these checks, the Government is:
💬 Raising awareness of menopause symptoms.
💡 Encouraging more women to seek advice and treatment.
🏥 Making support a routine part of women’s healthcare.
For too long, women’s experiences of menopause have been minimised or misunderstood. Around three-quarters of women experience symptoms lasting an average of seven years - yet fewer than one in ten feel they have enough information or help.
Alongside campaigners such as Menopause Mandate and colleagues across Parliament, I have long pressed for greater awareness, and I welcome the Government’s decision to act. This reform is a huge step in the right direction, delivering tangible change for millions of women.
The Government will shortly renew the Women’s Health Strategy, setting out the next steps to improve care as part of the 10-Year Health Plan - creating a healthcare system that listens to women’s experiences and tackles long-standing inequalities.

💡 Help with Energy Bills - British Gas Support Fund Reopens
With winter approaching, it’s vital that everyone who’s struggling with energy costs knows help is available. I’d encourage British Gas customers in Enfield North to check if they qualify for support through the Energy Support Fund - the fund offers grants of up to £2,000 to help with energy bills.
The fund is available exclusively to British Gas customers with existing energy debt:
🔹 £50–£2,000 on a pre-payment meter, or
🔹 £250–£2,000 on a credit account
Last year, the scheme provided more than £4.2 million in grants to nearly 6,000 vulnerable households across Britain.
In addition, support is available to customers of any energy supplier through the British Gas Energy Trust’s Individuals and Families Fund, which offers grants of up to £1,700 for those struggling with energy debt.
🎥 Channel 4 Apprenticeships Open in London
I’m incredibly proud that Enfield North hosts some of London’s most dynamic film studios - driving local employment, developing creative talent, and placing our borough firmly at the heart of the UK’s world-leading film and television industry. Productions such as Slow Horses showcase the high-quality work being created right here in Enfield North.
On that note, the Channel 4 apprenticeship scheme is a fantastic opportunity for young people in our area to get their start in film, TV, and digital media - helping to open doors and build the next generation of creative talent - applications are now open for its next cohort of apprentices, with places available right here in London.
The Channel 4 Apprenticeship Programme is a key part of the broadcaster’s work to advance equity and inclusion, providing opportunities for people from under-represented groups to build careers in the creative industries.
Since launching the scheme, more than 100 apprentices have embarked on long-term placements across Channel 4’s offices in London, Leeds, Glasgow, Bristol, and Manchester. Over 14 to 36 months, apprentices gain hands-on experience in one of Channel 4’s departments while working towards Level 2, 3, 4, 6 or 7 qualifications.
This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone in Enfield North looking to start a career in television, digital media, or production.
I hope you have a good week!
Best wishes,
Feryal
